Just you

A fruit and vegetable shop buys produce at the wholesale mandi early each morning, sorts it and sells it through the day from a shop, stall or cart. It needs very little investment: crates, scales, some racks and a way to bring goods from the mandi. It suits someone who can go to the mandi before dawn, judge quality and price quickly, and stand at the shop all day. Everyone buys vegetables every few days, sales are in cash, and stock turns over daily. What you keep depends on how well you buy and how little you throw away. The hard parts are spoilage, prices that change every day, very early hours with no weekly off, and competition from street vendors and delivery apps.

Skills needed: Buying judgement at the mandi, sorting and display, quick mental arithmetic and friendly dealing with regular customers.

    How it works

    1. Reach the mandi early; compare rates and buy only what you can sell in a day or two.
    2. Transport, wash where needed, sort and grade.
    3. Display attractively; keep leafy items shaded and sprinkled.
    4. Sell through the day; lower prices on ripe stock in the evening.
    5. Remove spoiled produce and note what ran short for tomorrow's buying.

Risks and how to handle them

    Spoilage eats the margin

Buy daily in small quantities, keep perishable items cool and mark down in the evening rather than carry stock over.

Mandi prices jump or crash overnight

Price off each day's purchase rate and avoid holding more than a day or two of stock.

Health and fatigue from very early hours every day

Share mandi trips with a family member or another shopkeeper.

Eviction or fines for a roadside stall

Use a proper shop or get a vending certificate for a permitted spot.

    Tips from the trade

    • Regular supply to two or three eateries clears stock every day.
    • Fruit carries better margins than everyday vegetables but spoils faster.
    • Honest weights and removing bad pieces yourself build repeat customers quickly.

    Questions people ask

How much margin is there in vegetables?

There is no reliable standard figure. It depends on how well you buy, how much spoils and the competition around you. This page uses an assumed figure so that the calculator works; replace it with your own after a month of records.

Can I buy directly from farmers?

Yes, where farmers are nearby, and it can improve freshness and price. It also means collecting small lots yourself, which adds transport cost and time.

How much investment is needed to start a fruit and vegetable shop business?

About ₹1.48 lakh for a small unit: ₹89,000 for machinery and equipment, ₹22,500 for set-up costs and ₹36,200 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a fruit and vegetable shop business make per month?
