A uniform unit buys the fabric a school has specified, cuts it in standard sizes and stitches shirts, trousers, skirts and pinafores for supply to the school, its appointed shop or uniform retailers. Designs do not change from year to year, so there is no fashion risk and a school that is happy tends to reorder. It suits someone with tailoring or garment experience and contacts in local schools. Stitching is usually paid per piece. The business is very seasonal: most sales happen in the weeks before schools reopen, and stock must be made in advance. The hard parts are the money locked in fabric and stock for months, slow payment by schools and shops, leftover odd sizes, and winning the school's approval in the first place.

Skills needed: Size grading and cutting, production planning for the season, and relationship-building with school managements and uniform shops.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Private schools and their appointed uniform shops
  • Uniform and readymade retailers
  • Government school supply contractors
  • Coaching classes, hospitals, hotels and security agencies (other uniforms)

Ways to sell

  • Direct agreements with school managements
  • Supply to uniform shops on order
  • Tenders and GeM for institutional uniforms
  • A seasonal counter of your own near schools

Season: Extremely seasonal. Most sales fall between April and July; a smaller round comes for winter wear. The rest of the year is for other uniforms and building stock.

Competition: Established uniform suppliers hold school contracts for years. New units enter through new schools, better fit and on-time delivery, and non-school uniforms.

Risks and how to handle them

Cash locked in fabric and stock for months before the season

Arrange a working-capital limit, take advances from schools or shops, and cut to confirmed numbers.

Leftover stock in sizes that did not sell

Use last year's size-wise sales to plan, and stitch slow sizes only on order.

A school changes supplier or design

Serve several schools, and avoid holding more than one season's fabric in a school-specific cloth.

Late payment from schools and shops

Agree payment dates in writing and prefer cash sales to parents through a counter where the school allows it.

Tips from the trade

  • Hospital, hotel, factory and security uniforms fill the months when school work is over.
  • Fabric shade must match the school's exactly; buy one lot for the whole season.
  • Deliver before the school reopens; late stock is nearly worthless.

Questions people ask

How do I get a school's uniform order?+

Meet the management well before the season with a sample set in their fabric, a price list and a delivery plan. New schools and schools unhappy with late delivery are the usual openings.

What does the unit do for the rest of the year?+

Most uniform units add winter wear, sports kits and uniforms for hospitals, hotels and companies, and use the quiet months to build stock in fast-moving sizes.

How much investment is needed to start a school uniform stitching business?+

About ₹11 lakh for a small unit: ₹4.55 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹74,000 for set-up costs and ₹5.67 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a school uniform stitching business make per month?+

At 40% of capacity, sales are about ₹3.84 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹54,420 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹23,002, the owner keeps about ₹31,418 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for school uniform stitching?+

Industrial single-needle lockstitch machine (₹15,500–₹36,000); Overlock machine (about ₹30,000); Buttonhole and button-stitch machines (about ₹60,000); Fabric cutting machine (straight knife) (about ₹15,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for school uniform stitching?+

With a project cost of about ₹11 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹9.87 lakh falls under Mudra Tarun. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹3.84 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
