LIC Bima Sakhi (women insurance agents with a stipend)

एलआईसी बीमा सखी · एलआयसी विमा सखी

LIC's scheme for women to become insurance agents, with a monthly stipend for the first three years on top of commission. The stipend continues only if sales targets are met.

The short answer

A gentler start than an ordinary LIC agency, because a stipend supports you while you build customers. It is still sales work, not a salaried post: you are an agent, the stipend depends on meeting LIC's targets each year, and it stops after three years. Good for a woman who is comfortable talking to people about money and has a wide circle.

A Bima Sakhi is an LIC agent appointed under a scheme for women. LIC's own description is that Bima Sakhis are normal agents with the added benefit of a stipend, subject to terms and conditions. You are trained, pass the agents' examination, and then sell LIC policies in your area and service those customers. For the first three years LIC pays a monthly stipend in addition to the commission on the policies you sell. The stipend is tied to performance norms in each year. After the third year you continue as a regular agent on commission alone.

What you need

  • Age 18 or above.
  • Women aged 18 to 70 who have passed Class 10, as reported. Rural women are given priority.
  • Relatives of existing LIC agents and employees, and retired LIC employees, are reported as not eligible.
  • Class 10 certificate, age and address proof, Aadhaar, PAN, photographs and a bank account.
  • The agents' pre-recruitment training and examination.

How the money works

Two streams. LIC pays a monthly stipend in each of the first three years, as long as you meet the scheme's performance norms. Separately, you earn the normal agent's commission on every premium your customers pay, in the first year of a policy and at a lower rate on renewals.

  • The stipend falls each year and ends after the third.
  • Missing the yearly norm can stop the stipend. Ask for the norms in writing: how many policies, by when, and how many must still be in force.
  • Commission continues for as long as you remain an agent and the policies stay in force.

What people actually take home

We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.

  • The stipend is reported as ₹7,000 a month in the first year, ₹6,000 in the second and ₹5,000 in the third, payable only for the first three consecutive years and subject to meeting the norms. Commission on policies sold is paid in addition.

What we could not find

  • LIC's full terms: the exact performance norms for each stipend year. One website says 65% of the previous year's policies must still be in force; we could not confirm it.
  • How many Bima Sakhis keep the stipend in the second and third years.
  • The current commission chart.

Work out your own number

Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.

Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.

This shows commission only. Add the stipend for the year you are in, if you are meeting the norms. Take the commission rate from the branch's current chart.

Commission does not arrive evenly. Expect months with nothing, and count the months before your first sale as unpaid.

Is it legal where you live?

  • All India

A Bima Sakhi is an LIC agent, not an LIC employee. The usual rules for agents apply: training and an examination before appointment, one life insurer at a time, and no promises to customers beyond the policy document.

    As of Oct 2026

How to start

  1. Visit the nearest LIC branch and ask for the Bima Sakhi scheme, or apply from LIC's own website (licindia.in).
  2. Read the scheme terms, especially the yearly norms for the stipend.
  3. Submit your documents, complete the training and pass the agents' examination.
  4. Start with families you know. Understand what cover each one needs before suggesting a plan.
  5. Keep a diary of every policy and its renewal date, because lapsed policies can affect the stipend.

What is good about it

  • A stipend while you learn, which an ordinary new agent does not get.
  • Open to women from 18 to 70 with Class 10.
  • Flexible hours, mostly near home.
  • Renewal commission continues after the stipend ends.

What is hard about it

  • It is sales work, and the stipend depends on targets.
  • The stipend ends after three years and falls each year before that.
  • Early customers are mostly relatives and neighbours, and that circle is limited.
  • No salary and no employee benefits.

Traps to avoid

  • Agents or websites charging a fee to 'register' you as a Bima Sakhi. Apply only at an LIC branch or on licindia.in.
  • Being told it is a government job with a fixed salary. It is an agency with a conditional stipend.
  • Pressure to buy policies in your own family's name to meet the norm. That is your own money going out.
