The short answer
Easy to enter and hard to live on. The one independent study we found shows riders' income barely moved in three years while their costs rose by a fifth. It works as temporary income for someone who already owns a two-wheeler. It is not a career, and it should not be the reason to buy a bike on loan.
You log in to the rider app, accept an order, wait at the restaurant while the food is packed, and ride to the customer. Trips are longer than in grocery delivery, and the busy hours are lunch and dinner, so the working day is split in two with a slow afternoon in between. You are paid for each delivery, with more for distance, bad weather and reaching a daily or weekly target. Waiting at restaurants and waiting for the next order are unpaid. You are a partner, not an employee: no salary, no paid leave, no provident fund.
What you need
- Age 18 or above.
- A two-wheeler with RC and insurance, or a cycle or e-bike in cities where the platform accepts them.
- A valid driving licence for a motor vehicle.
- An Android smartphone with mobile data.
- Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account in your own name.
- Petrol money for the first week or two.

How the money works
The app pays a base amount per order, extra for distance and waiting beyond a limit, and incentives for peak hours, rain and completing a target number of orders. Tips from customers are passed on. Payouts are usually weekly. Petrol, servicing, mobile data and fines are your own expense.
- Rate cards differ by city and change without notice.
- A large share of the income is incentive pay tied to targets, and targets get harder to hit as more riders join and traffic worsens.
- Long waits at restaurants reduce how many orders you can finish in the peak hours.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
A survey of 924 riders of one food delivery platform in 28 cities found an average income of ₹20,026 a month in 2022, up from ₹19,239 in 2019: a rise of 4% in three years.
Independent studySurvey of April–May 2022, published Aug 2023 · NCAER: Socio-economic Impact Assessment of Food Delivery Platform Workers
In the same study, after adjusting for inflation, real income fell 11% to ₹11,963 a month, while riders' expenses rose by more than 20%. The authors pointed to fuel prices and to targets becoming harder to reach.
Independent studySurvey of April–May 2022, published Aug 2023 · Factly review of the NCAER study
The founder of Zomato and Blinkit said delivery partners net about ₹21,000 a month after roughly 20% for fuel and maintenance. A Telangana gig workers' union said that equals about ₹81 an hour over roughly 260 hours a month.

What we could not find
- An independent survey later than 2022. The NCAER figures are four years old.
- A current per-order rate for any city that we could confirm. This is why the calculator starts empty.
- The exact joining charge on each platform.
Work out your own number
Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.
Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.
Take 'pay per order' from your last week's payout divided by the orders you completed, so that incentives are included.
Count the hours you are logged in and waiting, not only the hours you are riding. Vehicle wear, repairs, traffic fines and days without work come out of the same money.
Is it legal where you live?
All India
The Code on Social Security, 2020 recognises gig and platform workers and requires platforms to pay into a social security fund. Workers can register free on the e-Shram portal. The law is reported to be in force from November 2025, but the rules for paying out benefits were still being completed when we checked.

How to start
- Talk to three or four riders outside a busy restaurant near you. Ask what they are left with after petrol and how many hours they log in.
- Install the platform's own rider app. Do not pay an agent to register you.
- Upload Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence, RC and bank details and finish the in-app training.
- Read your city's rate card and incentive slabs.
- Register on e-Shram (eshram.gov.in).
- Track orders, payout, petrol and hours for a month, then put the totals in the calculator.
What is good about it
- No interview, no qualification, and you can start within days.
- Flexible hours: you can work only lunch and dinner peaks.
- Weekly payouts and customer tips.
What is hard about it
- Income has not kept up with prices: the NCAER study found real income down 11% in three years.
- You pay for petrol, repairs, tyres and fines, and you ride more kilometres per order than in grocery delivery.
- Split days: busy at lunch and at night, idle and unpaid in between.
- Road risk is high, especially at night and in the rain. A private vehicle's insurance may not cover commercial delivery; ask your insurer.
- The app can suspend your ID over ratings or complaints.
- No increments, no promotion, and no skill that raises your pay later.
Traps to avoid
- Agents asking for a 'joining fee' or 'ID activation fee'. Registration through the official app does not need one.
- Rented or shared delivery IDs. The payout goes to the account holder and you have no insurance cover.
- Taking a two-wheeler loan on the promise of delivery income. Enter the EMI under 'other costs' in the calculator before you sign.
Where this can lead
- Quick-commerce deliveryShorter trips from one store. Many riders do both and compare.
- Paid apprenticeshipA fixed stipend and a trade certificate.
- Tiffin serviceIf you know the food trade from the delivery side, this is the small-capital business next to it.
- Gramin Dak SevakA 10th-pass government post selected on marks, with no exam.
Questions people ask
How much does a Swiggy or Zomato delivery partner earn in a month?
The only independent study we found (NCAER, surveyed in 2022) put the average at about ₹20,000 a month before costs. The company's own figure for Zomato and Blinkit is about ₹21,000 after fuel, which a union says is about ₹81 an hour. Your result depends on your city, the hours you log in and how many targets you hit.
Can I do food delivery on a cycle?
Some cities allow cycle and e-bike riders, usually for short-distance orders. Fewer orders are offered and incentives are harder to reach, but you have no petrol cost. Check in the rider app for your city.
Should I buy a bike on loan to start delivery work?
Be careful. The EMI is fixed and the delivery income is not. Add the EMI, insurance and servicing to the calculator as monthly costs and see what is left for each hour you work before deciding.
