Network Marketing (MLM, Direct Selling): Can You Really Earn?
नेटवर्क मार्केटिंग (एमएलएम): क्या सच में कमाई होती है? · नेटवर्क मार्केटिंग: खरंच कमाई होते का?
Buying a company's products and recruiting others to do the same, with income promised from your 'team'. The published income data of such companies shows most participants earn little or nothing.
The short answer
For nearly everyone who joins, no. When a regulator in the United States read the income statements of 70 such companies, it found that most participants made $1,000 or less in a year before expenses, and in many companies most made nothing. In India a scheme that pays you for recruiting people, not for selling goods, is a banned pyramid scheme. If the pitch is about joining and building a team, walk away.
A direct selling company sells through individuals instead of shops. In its plain form you buy products at a discount and sell them to people you know at the listed price. In the multi-level form you are also paid a share of the purchases made by the people you recruit, and by the people they recruit. The presentation, usually by a friend or relative, shows a chart of how a few recruits become hundreds and stresses the income of people at the top. What it leaves out is arithmetic: every level needs several times more people than the one above, so the great majority must always be at the bottom, buying products every month to stay 'active' and earning little. The products are often priced well above shop equivalents, which makes them hard to sell to anyone except other members.
What it takes
- Money for a starter kit or first product order, and usually a minimum purchase every month to remain eligible for commission.
- A wide circle of relatives and friends you are prepared to sell to and recruit.
- Time for meetings, calls and seminars, and often money for tickets and training material.
| Before you start | Cost |
|---|---|
| Joining kit or first orderThe direct selling rules are understood to bar an entry or registration fee; we could not confirm the wording. A compulsory product purchase to join works the same way: ask in writing what is refundable. | Ask first |
| Monthly purchase to stay 'active'This is what most members actually spend. Add it up for a year before you join. | Ask first |
| Seminars, training, travelUsually sold by the people above you. | Ask first |
How the money works
On paper you earn a retail margin on what you sell, and a commission on the purchases of your downline. In practice most members sell little outside their own household, recruit few people, and their main transaction is their own monthly purchase. The commission flows upward to a small number of early joiners.
- If most of the money comes from members' own purchases and joining orders, not from sales to outside customers, the scheme cannot work for the people who join late.
- Income shown in presentations is the best case of a handful of people. Ask for the company's own figures for an average member.
- Your cost includes the products you bought and did not need, not just the kit.
What the numbers say
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
Staff of the US Federal Trade Commission reviewed 70 multi-level marketing companies' own income disclosure statements. Many participants received no payment at all, and the vast majority received $1,000 or less in a year, under $84 a month, before expenses. In at least 17 of the companies most participants made nothing.

The same report found that the statements usually left out participants' expenses, which in some companies exceed income, and tended to highlight the high earnings of a small number of people.

In India, the Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021 prohibit direct selling companies and sellers from promoting pyramid schemes or money circulation schemes, and provide a cooling-off period in which a participant can cancel without penalty.

- Income disclosure statements published by companies operating in India. Ask the company for one.
| Ask before you start | Where to ask |
|---|---|
| What did the average member, not the top member, earn last year after their own purchases? | The company, in writing. If there is no answer, that is your answer. |
| Can I return unsold products for a refund, within how many days, and with what deduction? | The company's written buy-back and cooling-off policy |
| Is the company complying with the direct selling rules, and are there complaints against it? | The National Consumer Helpline (1915) and a web search of the company's name with 'complaint' |
| How much of what you earned came from customers outside the network? | The person recruiting you. Ask to see a bank statement, not a screenshot. |
Is it legal where you live?
All India
Direct selling is legal and regulated by the Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021. Pyramid schemes and money circulation schemes, where payment depends mainly on enrolling new members, are banned, also under the Prize Chits and Money Circulation Schemes (Banning) Act, 1978. A company calling itself 'direct selling' does not make its plan legal; what matters is whether income comes from real sales to consumers.
As of Oct 2026
What to do
- Ask the four questions above before you attend a second meeting.
- Compare the product's price with a similar product in a shop. If it is far higher, it will not sell to outsiders.
- Never borrow, pledge jewellery or use household savings to join or to 'reach a rank'.
- Do not buy stock in advance to qualify for a bonus.
- If you like the products, buy them as a customer and sell only what people ask for.
- If you have joined and want out, use the cooling-off period and the company's buy-back policy in writing, and complain to the consumer helpline if refused.
What is good about it
- It is legal when income comes from genuine product sales.
- Low cost to try compared with opening a shop.
- Some people who are strong at selling and have a large customer base do earn a retail margin.
What is hard about it
- Most participants earn little or nothing, by the companies' own published figures.
- Members usually spend more on monthly purchases than they earn.
- It turns relatives and friends into sales targets and strains those relationships.
- Earnings depend on recruiting, and there are never enough new people for those who join late.
- Unsold products pile up at home.
- The line between a legal plan and a banned pyramid is hard for a new member to judge.
Traps to avoid
- Plans that pay for each person you enrol, with products as an afterthought. That is a pyramid scheme.
- 'Invest and earn daily returns by adding members' apps, including crypto and 'ad-viewing' schemes. These are money circulation schemes and collapse.
- Pressure to take a loan or sell gold to buy a higher 'package'.
- Health products sold with claims of curing diabetes, cancer or infertility. Such claims are illegal and dangerous.
- Reselling or 'franchise' offers where the real income is from adding resellers under you.

Questions people ask
Is network marketing legal in India?
Direct selling of real products is legal and is regulated by the Consumer Protection (Direct Selling) Rules, 2021. Pyramid and money circulation schemes, where you are paid mainly for bringing in new members, are banned.
How do I tell a direct selling company from a pyramid scheme?
Ask where the money comes from. If members earn mainly from selling products to customers outside the network, it is direct selling. If they earn mainly from joining orders and the purchases of recruits, with pressure to recruit, it works as a pyramid whatever it is called.
Can a housewife earn from network marketing?
A few do, mostly through steady retail sales to real customers. Most members spend more on their own monthly purchases than they earn. Work out a full year of purchases, travel and meetings against realistic sales before joining.
Can I get my money back after joining?
The 2021 rules provide a cooling-off period to cancel without penalty and require a buy-back policy for unsold goods. Ask for both in writing before paying, and complain to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915 if a refund is refused.
