Monthly salary (gross)
₹30,000–₹40,000
Fixed Agniveer package set by the Navy: ₹30,000 a month in year 1, rising by a fixed increment each year to ₹40,000 in year 4. 30% goes to the Seva Nidhi fund and is matched by the government, so in-hand pay starts at about ₹21,000. A Seva Nidhi of about ₹10.04 lakh plus interest is paid on exit. There is no DA, pension or gratuity.
What you will actually do
- SSR: operating and maintaining radars, sonars, weapons, engines or communication equipment
- MR: working as chef, steward or hygienist on ships and shore establishments
- Watchkeeping, seamanship and damage-control duties on board
- Guard and ceremonial duties ashore
- Cleaning and upkeep of the ship
A typical day
Basic training is at INS Chilka, then professional training and a ship or shore posting. At sea you stand watches, do your trade work in between and join everyone in cleaning ship and drills such as firefighting. You sleep in a shared mess deck with a bunk and a locker. In harbour there is a working day plus duty nights on board. Sea time means weeks without seeing land or family.

How to get in
Indian Navy

Eligibility: Agniveer (MR, Matric Recruit): Class 10 pass. Agniveer (SSR, Senior Secondary Recruit): Class 12 with Mathematics and Physics and at least one of Chemistry, Biology or Computer Science. Open to unmarried men and women. Age 17–21. The age band is 17½ to 21 years on the day of enrolment. No category-based relaxation.
Physical standards: Physical fitness test with a 1.6 km run, squats, push-ups and sit-ups to the prescribed standards, plus height and eyesight requirements. Candidates are expected to be able to swim or learn during training.
