What you will actually do

  • Receiving, inspecting and accounting for materials from suppliers
  • Storing stock safely and issuing it against indents
  • Maintaining ledgers in the materials management system
  • Stock verification and disposal of scrap
  • Supervising depot staff and handling contracts for loading and transport

A typical day

You are in charge of a ward of a stores depot: thousands of items from bolts to brake blocks. The day is spent checking incoming consignments against purchase orders, clearing indents from sheds and depots, and updating the online system so stock figures match what is on the racks. Stock verifiers audit you regularly, and a shortage is your responsibility. It is mostly day duty within one depot.
