What you will actually do
- Maintaining and updating land records: the 7/12 extract, 8-A and mutation register
- Recording mutations after sale, inheritance and partition
- Collecting land revenue and other government dues
- Crop inspection (pik pahani) and panchnamas of crop loss after floods, drought or hail
- Issuing and verifying documents needed for income, caste and residence certificates
- Election duties and reporting local events to the Tehsildar
A typical day
You are in charge of a saza, a group of a few villages. Farmers come to the talathi office for 7/12 extracts, mutation entries and signatures on scheme forms, and many of them have been waiting. Part of the day goes in visits for crop inspection or to prepare a panchnama after a calamity. Then there are reports the tehsil office wants by evening. Land matters are sensitive, so pressure from locals and their political backers is routine.
