What you will actually do

  • Carrying out scheduled maintenance of coaches, wagons or locomotives
  • Repairing electrical, mechanical or signalling equipment
  • Attending breakdowns on the line
  • Using tools, gauges and test equipment as per maintenance manuals
  • Recording work done in maintenance registers

A typical day

You work with your hands in a shed, depot, workshop or along the line, under a junior engineer. In a coaching depot that means going under coaches to check brakes and springs between trips. In signal or overhead-line gangs it means going out by trolley or tower wagon to fix faults. The work is greasy, physical and done in shifts; breakdowns do not wait for morning.
