A coaching class teaches school subjects or exam preparation to batches of students for a monthly or yearly fee. It can begin in a room at home with one teacher and grow into a centre with several batches and part-time faculty. It suits a good teacher: parents choose a class for the teacher's reputation and the results of earlier students. Costs are mostly rent and faculty pay, and there is almost no material cost, so a full batch is very profitable and a half-empty one is not. The profit shown assumes the owner teaches. The hard parts are slow first-year admissions, students leaving when a teacher leaves, fee defaults, online competition and state rules on coaching centres.
Skills needed: Strong subject knowledge and teaching ability; patience with students and parents; basic administration of batches, tests and fees.

Season: Admissions peak from March to June. Income is steady through the academic year and dips after final exams.
Competition: Home tutors, established local classes, branded chains and online courses. A local class competes on personal attention, results and fees.
Risks and how to handle them
Few admissions in the first year
Start with batches you can teach yourself, keep rent low and let results build the name.
A popular teacher leaves and takes students
Teach the core subject yourself and use written agreements with faculty.
Fee defaults and mid-year dropouts
Collect fees in advance by term and keep a clear refund policy.
Non-compliance with coaching-centre rules
Check state registration, age, space and fire-safety rules before opening and display fees openly.
Tips from the trade
- One strong subject taught well brings more students than many subjects taught averagely.
- Parents trust regular test reports more than advertisements.
- Recorded revision videos and doubt sessions help compete with online courses.
