A small detergent unit dry-mixes soda ash, acid slurry (LABSA), fillers, builders, colour and perfume in a ribbon blender, lets the powder mature, sieves it and packs it in pouches or loose bags. There is no heating or complicated chemistry at this scale, so the plant is cheap and a batch takes under an hour. Every household buys washing powder, and low-priced local brands sell well in villages and to laundries and hotels. The margin per kilo is small, so earnings depend on selling several tonnes a month. The hard parts are selling against big brands with heavy advertising, chemical price swings, and handling acid slurry safely.

Skills needed: Basic formulation training (available from MSME Development Institutes and KVIC), careful handling of chemicals, and strong local selling.

How it works

  1. Weigh soda ash and fillers into the ribbon blender.
  2. Add acid slurry slowly while mixing so it neutralises evenly.
  3. Add builders, colour speckles and perfume; mix until uniform.
  4. Spread the powder to cool and mature for several hours.
  5. Sieve to break lumps.
  6. Weigh, pack, seal and bundle.

Loan route

Mudra loan (Kishore)

Own money ₹49,884 · Loan ₹4.49 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹10,468

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹74,825 (general, urban) to ₹1.75 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹8,723–₹6,979.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Village and small-town kirana shops
  • Laundries, dhobis and dry cleaners
  • Hotels, hostels and hospitals
  • Wholesalers and weekly-market traders

Ways to sell

  • Shop-to-shop sales with small trial packs
  • Loose 25 kg bags to laundries and institutions
  • Weekly markets (haats)
  • Sub-dealers in nearby villages

Season: Steady all year.

Competition: National brands at every price point, plus many local powders. Small units survive on price, bigger shop margins and institutional buyers.

Risks and how to handle them

Shops do not reorder because customers stick to known brands

Start with laundries and institutions that buy on performance and price, and use small low-priced trial packs for shops.

Soda ash or LABSA prices rise

Hold limited stock, compare two chemical dealers and adjust pack price or weight promptly.

Powder cakes or loses perfume in storage

Let batches mature before packing, use moisture-proof pouches and keep stock rotating.

Skin and eye burns from acid slurry and soda ash dust

Use gloves, goggles and masks; store acid in proper drums with water nearby for washing.

Tips from the trade

  • Test your powder against the brand it must replace, on real clothes, before printing pouches.
  • Institutional buyers want consistent quality and bills; they are steadier than shops.
  • Liquid dishwash and phenyl can be added later with little extra equipment.

Questions people ask

Do I need a chemistry degree to make detergent powder?+

No. Small units follow a tested recipe and a fixed mixing order. A short training course and a few supervised trial batches are enough, but safe handling of acid slurry is essential.

Can this be done from home?+

It is better in a separate shed. The chemicals irritate skin and lungs, the dust spreads, and you need room to mature and store powder.

How much investment is needed to start a detergent powder making business?+

About ₹4.99 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.77 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹50,000 for set-up costs and ₹2.72 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a detergent powder making business make per month?+

At 55% of capacity, sales are about ₹3.09 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹27,260 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹10,468, the owner keeps about ₹16,792 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Which machines are needed for detergent powder making?+

Ribbon blender for detergent powder (₹40,000–₹1.65 lakh); Vibro sieve (about ₹25,000); Band sealer (₹12,000–₹30,000).

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for detergent powder making?+

With a project cost of about ₹4.99 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹4.49 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.75 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
