Areca leaf plates are made from the sheath that falls naturally from the areca (supari) palm. The sheaths are collected, washed, soaked, pressed between heated dies into plates and bowls, trimmed, dried and packed. Nothing is added, so the plates are fully compostable and sell at a premium over paper plates to caterers, organic stores and exporters. The business is practical only where areca is grown, mainly in Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Assam and nearby areas, because the raw material is bulky and seasonal. It suits someone in such an area with space to store a year's sheaths. The hard parts are collecting and storing enough good sheaths in the dry season, fungus if plates are not dried fully, slow hand-fed machines, and buyers who want uniform quality in large lots.
Skills needed: Sheath selection and soaking, die temperature and pressing time, and thorough drying. Learnt in a few weeks from the machine supplier or a working unit.

Supplier listings show 10-inch plates at ₹3.50–6.40 each wholesale. One machine seller rates a semi-automatic unit at 2,000 plates a day. The sheath cost is an estimate: industry reports say sheaths are cheap or free and that the real cost is collection, bundling and transport, so ask local collectors for a delivered rate.

Season: Sheaths fall mainly in the dry months, so raw material is collected and stored then. Sales peak in the wedding and festival season; drying is slow in the monsoon.
Competition: Many small units in areca belts, and paper and bagasse plates on price. Uniform colour, no fungus and correct counts win repeat and export buyers.
Risks and how to handle them
Not enough good sheaths, or prices rise as more units compete for them
Tie up with growers and collectors before the season and store a full year's need under cover.
Plates grow fungus in storage or transit
Dry fully before packing, use a dryer in the monsoon and never pack warm or damp plates.
Rejection for uneven colour, cracks or spots
Grade sheaths before pressing and sell lower grades locally at a lower price.
The unit is set up far from areca-growing areas
Do not start this business where sheaths must be trucked in from another region.
Tips from the trade
- The plate's grade depends on the sheath; pay collectors more for clean, wide, unspotted sheaths.
- Offcuts and rejected plates can be sold as cattle feed supplement or compost material.
- Export traders buy by the container; a group of small units can fill orders one unit cannot.
Questions people ask
Can I start this business anywhere in India?
Not sensibly. The sheaths are bulky and available only where areca palms grow. Units far from those areas struggle with raw-material cost and supply.
Are areca plates really chemical-free?
Properly made plates are only washed, heat-pressed and dried. Buyers and exporters may still ask for a lab report, so avoid any bleach, colour or coating.
How much investment is needed to start a areca leaf plate making business?
About ₹6.68 lakh for a small unit: ₹4.65 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹62,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.41 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.
How much profit can a areca leaf plate making business make per month?
At 45% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.01 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹24,615 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹14,026, the owner keeps about ₹10,589 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.
Which machines are needed for areca leaf plate making?
Semi-automatic areca leaf plate making machine, 4–5 stations (₹1.15 lakh–₹6.15 lakh).
Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for areca leaf plate making?
With a project cost of about ₹6.68 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹6.02 lakh falls under Mudra Tarun. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹2.34 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
