A men's salon offers haircuts, shaving and beard trimming, hair colour, head massage, facials and clean-ups. It needs a small shop on a road or in a market, two or three chairs with mirrors, basic tools and one or two barbers. It suits a trained barber, because men return to the same person every few weeks for years. Materials cost very little, so nearly all of each bill goes towards rent, wages and the owner's income. The profit shown assumes the owner works a chair. The hard parts are long hours including Sundays and holidays, barbers who leave and open nearby, low prices in small towns, and keeping the shop visibly clean.
Skills needed: Haircutting and shaving skill from apprenticeship or a course; hygiene; an eye for current styles.

Risks and how to handle them
A skilled barber leaves and customers follow
Work a chair yourself, pay a share of billing and treat staff well.
Infection from shared blades or tools
Use a new blade for every customer, sterilise tools and wash towels after each use.
Prices are too low to cover rent in a good location
Add higher-value services such as colour, facials and grooming packages.
Skin reactions to colour or bleach
Use genuine products and do a patch test.
Tips from the trade
- An air-conditioned, clean shop can charge noticeably more than the stall next door.
- Add-on services lift the bill more easily than raising the haircut price.
- Opening early and closing late suits working customers.
Questions people ask
Can I open a salon without being a barber?+
Yes, but you depend entirely on hired barbers, who often leave to start their own shops. Salons run by a working barber are more stable.
Should I open a unisex salon instead?+
A unisex salon needs more space, separate sections, trained women staff and higher investment. It suits a city market; a men's salon is the simpler start.
How much investment is needed to start a men's salon business?+
About ₹2.09 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.46 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹35,500 for set-up costs and ₹27,618 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.
How much profit can a men's salon business make per month?+
At 55% of capacity, sales are about ₹55,440 a month and operating profit about ₹25,693 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹4,378, the owner keeps about ₹21,315 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.
Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for men's salon?+
With a project cost of about ₹2.09 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹1.88 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹73,016 here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.
What licences are required for men's salon?+
Mandatory: Shop and Establishment registration. Depending on your set-up you may also need: Local body trade licence, GST registration, Udyam registration.
