A mobile repair shop fixes broken displays, weak batteries, charging ports, speakers, water damage and software problems, and sells accessories from the same counter. It needs a small shop on a busy road, a set of hand and soldering tools and a trained technician. It suits someone who has done a repair course or worked in a shop, because customers come back to a technician they trust. Income comes from labour on each job plus a margin on parts and accessories. The profit shown here assumes the owner is the main technician. The hard parts are fast-changing phone models, low-quality spare parts that fail and bring customers back angry, many competing shops, and brand service centres for phones under warranty.

Skills needed: A mobile repair course (ITI, private institute or PMKVY) or shop experience. Chip-level repair takes longer to learn and earns more.

How it works

  1. Note the fault, phone details and the customer's number; give a job slip.
  2. Diagnose and quote the price before opening the phone.
  3. Repair or replace the part; test all functions.
  4. Return the phone with the old part and a short warranty on the repair.
  5. Record the job and reorder fast-moving parts.

Loan route

Mudra loan (Kishore)

Own money ₹30,568 · Loan ₹2.75 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹6,415

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹45,853 (general, urban) to ₹1.07 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹5,346–₹4,276.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Walk-in phone users in your area
  • Shops and offices nearby
  • Second-hand phone dealers (refurbishing)
  • Other repair shops (chip-level work)

Ways to sell

  • A visible shop with a clear signboard
  • Google Business listing and reviews
  • Doorstep pick-up and drop
  • Tie-ups with mobile retailers who do not repair

Season: Steady all year, with more water-damage jobs in the monsoon.

Competition: Many small shops in every market, plus brand service centres. Honest pricing, quick turnaround and a repair warranty bring repeat customers.

Risks and how to handle them

A customer's phone is damaged further or data is lost during repair

Explain risks and get consent on the job slip; back up data where possible; do not attempt jobs beyond your skill.

Poor-quality spare parts fail within days

Buy from reliable distributors, offer graded options and give a written warranty only on parts you trust.

New models need new skills and tools

Keep learning from technician groups and courses; add chip-level repair over time.

Stolen phones brought for unlocking

Refuse unlocking without proof of ownership and keep a record of ID for such jobs.

Tips from the trade

  • Display and battery jobs are most of the work; stock parts for the models common in your area.
  • Accessories give steady cash sales between repair jobs.
  • Never keep a customer's phone without a job slip.

Questions people ask

Do I need a qualification to open a mobile repair shop?+

No licence or degree is required by law, but you need real repair skill. A three- to six-month course plus some months working in a busy shop is the usual route.

Should I buy an OCA lamination machine at the start?+

Usually not. It is one of the costliest tools and is needed only for glass-only display repairs. Many shops outsource this work at first.

How much investment is needed to start a mobile repair shop business?+

About ₹3.06 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.66 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹42,000 for set-up costs and ₹97,685 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a mobile repair shop business make per month?+

At 55% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.37 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹22,705 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹6,415, the owner keeps about ₹16,290 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for mobile repair shop?+

With a project cost of about ₹3.06 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹2.75 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.07 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

What licences are required for mobile repair shop?+

Mandatory: Shop and Establishment registration. Depending on your set-up you may also need: Udyam registration, GST registration, Local body trade licence, E-waste handling.
