Cab Driver on Ola, Uber or Rapido

ओला-उबर कैब ड्राइवर · ओला-उबर कॅब चालक

Driving passengers in a commercial car through an app, in your own car, a leased one or as a driver for a fleet owner. Real earnings depend on the car's EMI or rent as much as on the fares.

The short answer

Not a no-money option if you buy the car: the loan instalment is fixed and the fares are not. It is open with no money if you drive someone else's car for a salary or a share. Either way, work out what is left after fuel, the platform's cut and the car's cost before you commit.

There are three ways in. You can own a commercially registered car and attach it to the apps; you can lease one from the platform's partner or a fleet for a daily or weekly rent; or you can drive a fleet owner's car for a monthly salary or a share of the day's fares. In every case you need a driving licence valid for commercial vehicles as your state requires, and the car needs a yellow plate, permit, fitness certificate and commercial insurance. The work is long hours in traffic, with the busiest times in the morning, evening and late night, and airport and outstation trips paying best.

What you need

  • Age 18 or above.
  • A driving licence for a light motor vehicle, with whatever commercial endorsement or badge your state's transport department requires.
  • A commercially registered car with permit, fitness certificate, commercial insurance and pollution certificate, whether owned, leased or the fleet owner's.
  • Police verification, Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account.
  • An Android smartphone with data.
  • Knowledge of the city, and patience with passengers.

How the money works

Passengers pay the fare in cash or online. The platform keeps its share, either as a commission on each fare or as a fixed daily or monthly access fee, and pays out the rest. From that you pay fuel or CNG, and either the car's loan instalment, the lease rent or the owner's share.

  • Platforms change their commission, incentives and fare rates without notice.
  • Rapido has moved cab and auto drivers to a fixed fee in place of commission in some cities; check what applies in yours.
  • Cancellations, long pickups and the empty drive back are unpaid.
  • Repairs, tyres, fines and days when the car is in the garage come out of your pocket if the car is yours.

What people actually take home

We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.

What we could not find

  • Any recent independent survey of what cab drivers keep after fuel, commission and the car's cost.
  • Current commission rates of Ola and Uber in Indian cities.
  • Lease rents for cars offered through the platforms.

Work out your own number

Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.

Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.

For 'pay per trip' enter what reaches you after the platform's share. Put the car's EMI or lease rent, insurance and servicing under 'other costs'. For CNG, enter km per kg and the price per kg.

Count the hours you are logged in and waiting, not only the hours you are riding. Vehicle wear, repairs, traffic fines and days without work come out of the same money.

Is it legal where you live?

  • All India

Carrying passengers for hire needs a commercially registered vehicle with a permit, and a driver whose licence meets the state's rules for transport vehicles. Aggregators are licensed by each state under its own rules, and those rules set limits on fares and commission that differ from state to state.

How to start

  1. Drive for a fleet owner for a few months before buying or leasing a car. You learn the earnings without the debt.
  2. Ask your RTO what licence endorsement or badge is needed and get it.
  3. Compare owning, leasing and salaried driving using the calculator, with the real EMI or rent.
  4. Register in the platform's own driver app with your documents.
  5. Keep a daily note of trips, payout, fuel and hours for a month.

What is good about it

  • Open to anyone with a licence, with no interview.
  • Driving a fleet car needs no money at all.
  • Higher fares per trip than bike or delivery work, with airport and outstation trips paying well.
  • An owned car is an asset once the loan is paid.

What is hard about it

  • The loan instalment or lease rent is due whether or not you get trips.
  • Very long hours are needed to cover costs in most cities.
  • Fare rates, commission and incentives are set by the platform.
  • Accidents, repairs and fines can wipe out a month.
  • Sitting in traffic for years is hard on health.

Traps to avoid

  • 'Attach your car and earn a fixed ₹50,000 a month' offers from fleet operators who take your car or your money and stop paying.
  • Agents selling app IDs or charging to 'unblock' an account.
  • Car loans sold on the promise of guaranteed platform income.

Where this can lead

Questions people ask

How much does an Ola or Uber driver earn?+

We found no recent independent figure. A 2019 survey put salaried platform drivers at ₹50 to ₹100 an hour, and Uber's own 2024 report says drivers earn more than in their next best work. What you keep depends mostly on the car's EMI or rent and fuel. Ask working drivers and use the calculator.

Can I drive for Ola or Uber without my own car?+

Yes. You can lease a car through the platform's partners, or drive a fleet owner's car for a salary or a share of fares. You still need the right licence for commercial vehicles.
