E-commerce Parcel Delivery (Amazon, Flipkart, courier companies)

ई-कॉमर्स पार्सल डिलीवरी · ई-कॉमर्स पार्सल डिलिव्हरी

Delivering online-shopping parcels to homes from a local delivery station, either on a monthly wage through a contractor or per parcel in your free hours.

The short answer

Steadier than food delivery: you get a day's parcels on one route and can finish by afternoon. Pay is modest and mostly through contractors, so ask who your actual employer is, whether you get provident fund, and what is deducted for undelivered or lost parcels.

Parcels reach a delivery station in your area early in the morning. You collect a bag for a set of streets, deliver through the day, collect cash on delivery, bring back returns and settle the cash at the station. Most delivery associates are hired by a staffing contractor or a small delivery partner firm for one company's station, and are paid either a monthly wage or per parcel delivered. Amazon also runs Flex, where anyone with a two-wheeler can book blocks of a few hours and deliver in their free time. Volumes and earnings jump during festival sales.

What you need

  • Age 18 or above.
  • A two-wheeler with RC, insurance and a valid licence. Some stations give routes to cyclists or walkers in dense areas.
  • An Android smartphone, Aadhaar, PAN and a bank account.
  • Ability to read addresses in English and the local language and to handle cash.
  • Background verification.

How the money works

A contractor pays you a monthly wage or a rate per delivered parcel, with extra during sale seasons. Under Amazon Flex you are paid per time block you complete. Fuel and phone costs are yours.

  • Returned, refused and 'customer not available' parcels may earn less or nothing.
  • Shortfalls in cash collected and lost parcels are recovered from you.
  • If you are on a monthly wage through a contractor, provident fund and ESI should apply.

What people actually take home

We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.

  • When Amazon launched Flex in India it said part-time delivery partners with a two-wheeler could earn ₹120 to ₹140 an hour. The figure is from 2019 and has not been updated in what we found. The programme later expanded to 65 cities.

What we could not find

  • Current per-parcel or monthly rates at any company's stations.
  • Any independent survey of delivery associates' earnings.

Work out your own number

Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.

Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.

If you are on a monthly wage, divide it by your delivered parcels to get the pay per parcel, or simply compare the wage with your fuel cost.

Count the hours you are logged in and waiting, not only the hours you are riding. Vehicle wear, repairs, traffic fines and days without work come out of the same money.

Is it legal where you live?

  • All India

A delivery associate on a contractor's rolls is an employee of that contractor, so minimum wage, provident fund and ESI rules apply. Those paid per block or per parcel as independent partners are platform workers and can register on e-Shram.

How to start

  1. Find the delivery stations near you: ask delivery staff where they collect parcels.
  2. Ask at the station which contractors are hiring and compare two.
  3. For Amazon Flex, install the Flex app and check whether your city is open.
  4. Read the rate sheet and deduction rules before your first day.
  5. Count cash and scan every parcel carefully; most deductions come from mismatches.

What is good about it

  • A fixed area and a day's work you can finish early.
  • Less waiting than food delivery, and less night work.
  • Monthly wage and PF in some arrangements.
  • Extra earnings in sale seasons.

What is hard about it

  • Contractors differ widely; some delay pay or deduct heavily.
  • Heavy bags and many stairs.
  • You carry cash and are liable for shortages.
  • Work drops after sale seasons, and temporary staff are let go.

Traps to avoid

  • 'Amazon delivery job' advertisements asking for a registration or ID card fee. The companies do not charge to hire.
  • Fake offer letters by WhatsApp. Verify at the actual station.
  • Contractors who keep your original documents.
