What you will actually do

  • Issuing unreserved and reserved tickets at the counter
  • Handling cancellations and refunds
  • Booking and delivering parcels and luggage
  • Tallying cash at the end of the shift
  • Answering passenger enquiries

A typical day

You sit at a ticket window for the shift with a queue in front of you, issuing tickets and giving change as fast as you can before trains leave. Any shortage in cash at closing comes out of your pocket, so you count carefully. At small stations the same clerk also books parcels and makes announcements. It is repetitive, and passengers in a hurry are not always polite.
