What you will actually do

  • Collecting blood and other samples from patients
  • Running routine haematology, biochemistry and urine tests
  • Preparing slides and reagents
  • Recording and reporting results
  • Cleaning and maintaining lab equipment

A typical day

Mornings are the rush: outpatients queue for sample collection and you draw blood, label tubes and start the analysers. By midday you are entering results and preparing reports for the pathologist to sign. Emergency samples from the wards come at any time. The work is repetitive and needs care, since a mislabelled sample can harm a patient.
