What you will actually do
- Beat patrolling, picket and night duty
- Law-and-order duty at festivals, processions, elections and VIP visits
- Police station duties: sentry, general diary, lock-up and malkhana
- Serving summons and warrants and escorting accused to court and jail
- Responding to emergency (112) calls with the response vehicle crew
- Helping investigating officers at scenes of crime
A typical day
Duty is assigned by the station officer each day and rarely ends on time. You may stand at a picket through the night, ride a response vehicle taking emergency calls, escort an undertrial to a distant court, or spend twelve hours on the route of a procession. Uttar Pradesh has frequent large bandobasts for fairs, festivals and elections, when leave stops and you may be sent to another district for weeks, living in temporary barracks.

Eligibility: Class 10 and Class 12 pass from a board established by law in India, or an equivalent recognised qualification. Candidates who have only appeared, or are appearing, in the qualifying examination are not eligible. Preference, other things being equal, for DOEACC/NIELIT 'O' level, two years in the Territorial Army, or NCC 'B' certificate. Age 18–22. Men: 18 to 22 years; women: 18 to 25 years, on the date fixed in the notice (1 July 2023 for the 2023 recruitment). OBC, SC, ST and other categories domiciled in Uttar Pradesh get relaxation under state orders. The state has also granted one-time extra relaxation by separate order in some recruitments; check the current notice.
Physical standards: Men: height 168 cm (160 cm for ST), chest 79 cm unexpanded and 84 cm expanded (77 and 82 cm for ST), with at least 5 cm expansion. Women: height 152 cm (147 cm for ST), weight at least 40 kg. Qualifying run: 4.8 km in 25 minutes for men and 2.4 km in 14 minutes for women.
