What you will actually do
- Planning crossings and precedence of trains over a controlled section
- Giving instructions to station masters by control phone
- Plotting train movements on the control chart or system
- Arranging engines, crew and paths for freight trains
- Handling unusual incidents, blocks and accidents on the section
A typical day
You sit at a control board in the divisional office with a headset, responsible for every train on perhaps 150 km of line. Each decision, which train waits and which goes first, shows up at once in punctuality figures. You talk to a dozen station masters, crew lobbies and the power controller non-stop for the whole shift. When a train fails or a line is blocked, you re-plan everything in minutes. It is mentally exhausting work with no slack time.
