What you will actually do

  • Maintaining signals, point machines, track circuits and axle counters
  • Testing and repairing relay and electronic interlocking equipment
  • Attending signal failures on the section at any hour
  • Carrying out scheduled inspections with the junior engineer
  • Recording maintenance and failure details

A typical day

You look after the signalling gear of a few stations with a helper. Routine days mean cleaning and testing point machines, checking battery and relay rooms and measuring track circuit voltages. A signal failure stops trains, so when the control office calls you go to the site immediately, day or night, and are timed on how fast you restore it. Much of the work is beside running tracks.
