  • Assisting in elections, census, relief distribution and welfare schemes
  • Acting as the first government contact for villagers

A typical day

The village office opens in the morning to a queue of people wanting certificates, patta copies or signatures on scheme applications. You verify each request against the village accounts, often visiting the house or field, and forward your report online to the Revenue Inspector. Flood, drought and election seasons take over entirely. You are expected to live in or near the village and be reachable in the evenings too.
