A CCTV installer surveys a site, quotes for cameras, recorder, hard disk and cabling, buys the equipment from a distributor, installs and configures it, and sets up viewing on the customer's phone. Income comes from the margin on equipment, the installation labour and later service calls or annual maintenance. It can be run from home with tools, a demo kit and a helper. It suits someone comfortable with basic electronics, networking and ladders. Demand has grown steadily among shops, housing societies, schools and homes. The hard parts are stiff price competition, customers comparing quotes with online prices, money locked in equipment until the customer pays, and call-backs for faults.

Skills needed: Basic electronics and networking, cable laying, drilling and neat finishing. Short courses and distributor trainings cover installation and configuration.

Guides put a basic four-camera analog job at ₹8,000–15,000 in all, including ₹3,000–8,000 of labour. The trade cost of equipment here is an assumption; get a distributor's price list. Larger and IP-camera jobs bill much more.

Risks and how to handle them

Customers compare your quote with online prices

Quote equipment and labour separately and sell the value of warranty and service.

Payment delays after installation

Take most of the equipment cost in advance and the balance on handover.

Repeated call-backs for faults

Use good cable, connectors and power supplies, and test fully before leaving.

Falls and electric shock

Use a stable ladder and safety belt at height and isolate power when working near wiring.

Tips from the trade

  • Maintenance contracts and added cameras from old customers cost nothing to win.
  • Learn IP cameras and basic networking; that is where the larger jobs are.
  • Photograph every completed job for your portfolio.

Questions people ask

Do I need to keep a lot of stock?+

No. Most installers buy equipment from a distributor after the customer confirms and pays an advance, keeping only cable, connectors and a few common cameras.

Is a licence needed to install CCTV?+

There is no national licence for installers. You need the usual business registrations, and the equipment you sell must meet the BIS rules for cameras.

How much investment is needed to start a cctv installation service business?+

About ₹2.35 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.35 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹13,000 for set-up costs and ₹86,860 as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.
