A computer repair shop fixes laptops and desktops: broken screens, dead batteries, keyboards, hinges, charging faults, slow or infected systems, data recovery and motherboard repair. It also sells chargers, RAM, SSDs, keyboards and other parts. It needs a small shop, tools, test equipment and a technician with real diagnostic skill. It suits someone trained in hardware who keeps learning, since models change every year. Income comes from labour plus a margin on parts; upgrades such as SSD and RAM are easy, well-paid jobs. The profit shown assumes the owner is the main technician. The hard parts are costly parts that must be right first time, customers' data at risk, chip-level work that takes years to master, and brand service centres for machines under warranty.

Skills needed: Hardware and networking course (ITI or private institute) plus shop experience. Chip-level motherboard repair is a separate, longer skill.

  3. Repair or replace; run a full test.
  4. Return the machine with the old part and a short warranty on the repair.
  5. Record the job and follow up AMC or upgrade opportunities.

Loan route

Mudra loan (Kishore)

Own money ₹34,528 · Loan ₹3.11 lakh · EMI ≈ ₹7,246

No collateral, no subsidy.

How Mudra works

PMEGP (new units)

Subsidy ₹51,792 (general, urban) to ₹1.21 lakh (special category, rural). EMI ≈ ₹6,038–₹4,830.

Own money 5–10%. Subsidy is held as a 3-year deposit, then adjusted against the loan.

How PMEGP works

Assumes 10.5% interest, 5 years including a 6-month moratorium. PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

No collateral and no third-party guarantee (covered by the Credit Guarantee Fund for Micro Units).

Who buys and how to sell

Buyers

  • Students and home users
  • Small offices, shops and clinics
  • Schools, coaching classes and cyber cafes
  • Other repair shops (chip-level work)

Ways to sell

  • A shop with a Google Business listing and reviews
  • Annual maintenance contracts with offices
  • On-site visits
  • Tie-ups with computer sellers who do not repair

Season: Steady; more work at the start of the academic year and after the monsoon (power and moisture damage).

Competition: Many small shops, brand service centres and freelance technicians. Honest diagnosis, data safety and quick turnaround bring repeat customers.

Risks and how to handle them

Customer data is lost during repair

Ask about backups, take written consent before formatting and keep customers' drives secure.

An expensive part is wrong or fails

Match part numbers before ordering, buy from suppliers who exchange, and take an advance on costly parts.

Fewer desktop repairs as people move to phones

Add laptop upgrades, networking, CCTV and office AMC work.

Stolen laptops brought for unlocking

Refuse BIOS or account unlocking without proof of ownership and keep a record of ID.

Tips from the trade

  • SSD and RAM upgrades are quick, safe jobs with a good margin; suggest them for slow machines.
  • Office AMCs give monthly income that walk-in repairs do not.
  • Never keep a customer's machine without a signed job slip listing its condition.

Questions people ask

Do I need a degree to start?+

No degree is required by law. A hardware and networking course followed by time in a busy repair shop is the usual route. Customers judge you by results.

Should I stock laptop screens and batteries?+

Only for the few models most common in your area. Most parts can be bought from a wholesale market or online supplier within a day or two once the job is confirmed.

How much investment is needed to start a computer and laptop repair business?+

About ₹3.45 lakh for a small unit: ₹1.81 lakh for machinery and equipment, ₹44,000 for set-up costs and ₹1.2 lakh as working capital (stock, credit to buyers and one month of expenses). Prices as of October 2026.

How much profit can a computer and laptop repair business make per month?+

At 55% of capacity, sales are about ₹1.64 lakh a month and operating profit about ₹24,460 before the loan instalment. After an EMI of about ₹7,246, the owner keeps about ₹17,214 a month until the loan is repaid. These are estimates; your prices, rent and sales decide the real figure.

Can I get a Mudra loan or PMEGP subsidy for computer and laptop repair?+

With a project cost of about ₹3.45 lakh, the bank loan of about ₹3.11 lakh falls under Mudra Kishore. Mudra has no subsidy. As a new unit you may instead apply under PMEGP, where the subsidy is 15–35% of the project cost (up to about ₹1.21 lakh here for a special-category applicant in a rural area). PMEGP was approved up to FY 2025-26. Check on the KVIC PMEGP portal that applications are open before you plan around the subsidy.

What licences are required for computer and laptop repair?+

Mandatory: Shop and Establishment registration, Genuine software only. Depending on your set-up you may also need: GST registration, Udyam registration, E-waste handling.
