The short answer
The most practical way to earn from inside the house for anyone who studied to Class 12 or beyond and likes children. It costs nothing to start and fits the hours when your own children are also studying. Growth is slow and by word of mouth, and the income is limited by the size of your room and the number of evenings in a week.
Parents in every colony look for someone nearby to sit with their children after school: to get homework done, explain what the class teacher rushed through and prepare for unit tests. You take a small batch at home, usually primary and middle-school children for all subjects, or older students for the one or two subjects you are strong in. Fees are monthly and per child. There is no syllabus of your own to design: you follow the school's textbook and timetable. What parents pay for is regularity, discipline and marks that improve.
What you need
- Sound knowledge of the classes and the board (state board, CBSE or ICSE) you plan to teach, in the language the children study in.
- A quiet room or corner that seats a small batch, with light and a fan.
- Two to three fixed hours every weekday evening, including during school examinations.
- A phone for a parents' WhatsApp group.
- A mat or a few stools, a small board and chalk or markers.

| Board, markers, mats or stoolsMost of this is already in the house. Buy more only as the batch grows. | Ask first |
How the money works
Each child's parents pay you a fixed fee every month, in advance, by cash or UPI. You set the fee by class and by the going rate in your own locality, and you keep all of it.
- Fees differ sharply by locality, board and class, so the only useful figure is what other tutors within a kilometre of you charge.
- Higher classes and single subjects such as mathematics, science and English pay more per child than all-subject primary batches.
- Income dips in the summer holidays unless you run a holiday batch.
- Fix a date for fees and a rule for absences at the start, in writing on the group.
What people actually take home
We do not estimate earnings ourselves. Each line below is someone else's figure, with who said it and when.
We found no published figure we could trust for this work. Use the questions below to find out locally before you start.
What we could not find
- Any survey of what home tutors charge or earn. Fees are local and nothing published was reliable enough to quote.
| Ask before you start | Where to ask |
|---|---|
| What do tutors in this colony charge per child for each class? | Two or three parents in your building, and other tuition teachers nearby |
| Which board and medium do most children here study in? | The nearest schools' notice boards and parents |
| Does my housing society allow classes in a flat? | Your society's office. Small batches are usually tolerated, but ask. |
Work out your own number
Put in the rates you are actually offered. The starting values are examples, not what you will get.
Fill in the empty boxes to see the result. We have left them empty because we found no figure we could trust.
For the fee, multiply the monthly fee you plan to charge by the months you will teach in a year. Leave the share at 100: there is nobody to split it with.
Commission does not arrive evenly. Expect months with nothing, and count the months before your first sale as unpaid.
Is it legal where you live?
All India
A small home batch needs no licence. Income from tuition is taxable like any other income if your total crosses the taxable limit. Rules for larger coaching centres, where a state has made them, apply to institutes with premises and staff, not to a few children at home; check your state's rule if you grow. Serving government and aided school teachers are barred from private tuition in several states.

How to start
- Decide the classes and subjects you can teach well. Start narrow: for example Classes 1 to 5, all subjects.
- Find out what nearby tutors charge and fix your fee a little below it for the first batch.
- Tell your neighbours, put a notice in your building's WhatsApp group and on the society board.
- Start even with two children. Give a short test every week and send the marks to parents.
- Keep a simple register of attendance and fees.
- When the room is full, add a second batch or raise the fee for new admissions, in that order.
What is good about it
- Nothing to invest and nothing to lose.
- Entirely from home, in evening hours.
- You keep the whole fee.
- Your own children study alongside.
- Steady, repeat income from the same families for years once results show.
What is hard about it
- Slow to build: the first year may bring only a handful of children.
- Tied to the house every evening, including during festivals near examinations.
- Income is capped by your room and your hours.
- Parents expect marks, and blame the tutor when they fall.
- Noise and footfall can annoy neighbours or the society.
Traps to avoid
- 'Home tutor' apps and agencies that charge the teacher a registration fee or take the first month's fee. Your first students are in your own building, for free.
- Online 'teaching jobs' that ask you to buy a kit or pay for training before any student is assigned.
Where this can lead
- Online tuitionThe same work over video, for students beyond your locality.
- Coaching classesWhen one room is no longer enough: rented premises, more batches and staff.
- How to become a government teacherB.Ed, CTET and the salaried route, for those who find they enjoy teaching.

Questions people ask
What qualification do I need to give tuition at home?
None by law. In practice you should have studied comfortably beyond the classes you teach: Class 12 for primary children, and a degree in the subject for Classes 9 to 12.
How much should I charge for home tuition?
Fees are local. Ask parents and other tutors within a kilometre what is charged for each class and board, and start a little below that. Use the calculator on this page with your own fee and number of students.
Do I need a licence or registration for tuition at home?
Not for a small batch at home. If you grow into a coaching centre with rented premises and staff, check your state's rules and the local shop and establishment registration.
