What you will actually do

  • Designing sample surveys and supervising field data collection
  • Compiling national accounts, price indices and other official statistics
  • Analysing data for a ministry and advising on indicators
  • Managing statistical units and field offices
  • Preparing reports and replies on statistical matters

A typical day

In a headquarters division you work on a specific product, for example an index or a survey round: checking methodology, validating data and drafting the release. In a field posting you head a regional office of the National Statistics Office, supervising Junior and Senior Statistical Officers who collect data. On deputation to a line ministry you run its statistics cell. It is technical desk work with periodic deadlines.
